MULTI-CULTURAL

I'VE BEEN AWAY FAR TOO LONG.

THIS POST WILL BE PARTICULARLY SCATTERBRAINED/MULTICULTURAL BECAUSE OF MY LONG ABSENCE. NORMALLY, THESE GEMS WOULD WARRANT THEIR OWN ENTRIES, BUT, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO READ THIS THANG EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, I MUST GIVE YOU MORE:

"MUSIC IS THE LOVE THAT GETS ME THROUGH EVERYTHING"
- MARCEL KING

THIS SONG IS SUPPOSEDLY SEAN RYDER'S FAVORTIE FACTORY RECORDS SINGLE OF ALL TIME.
FIND OUT WHY:

MARCEL KING - "REACH FOR LOVE"

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --

JUNGLE FEVER:
WHEN I SAW THIS VIDEO I WAS COMPLETELY IN LOVE. JUNGLISTS BOUNCING AROUND IN TOGAS AND HEAD-WREATHS WITH NEON-LIT BUST SCULPTURES AT EITHER END OF THE DJ BOOTH. AND OF COURSE, THE MUSIC IS THE SHIT. WICKED:

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --

CHEEKY HERBERT:

HERBIE HANCOCK KICKS IT WITH QUINCY JONES. THEY DISCUSS THE WONDERS OF SYNTHESIS.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --

THERE'S A LOT MORE STUFF I'VE BEEN MEANING TO POST ON HERE, BUT IT WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT TIME. ZSHARE IS BEING TROUBLESOME.
SOON!

CAMILLE

I read years ago about Prince's gender-ambiguous alter-ego "Camille" who did the lead vocal for "If I Was Your Girlfriend."
You know that song. It's pretty much the best Prince song.
I know what you're saying. "Yeah, Prince is cool or whateva, but isn't he kinda... just like... PLAYED?"

No.

So it turns out Prince made an entire album under the name Camille, which came out as a promo, but was subsequently aborted. Some of the songs made it onto "Sign 'O' The Times" but possibly the best one, "Good Love," was left off for some reason. Here's a line-up of the Camille classics:

If I Was Your Girlfriend - Prince

It should be obvious to anyone listening to these songs that Prince had at this point reached a peak unmatched by any other part of his career. "Sign 'O' The Times" is such a fucking great album, and Prince uses the legendary Fairlight CMI synthesizer throughout the whole thing.
Will someone PLEASE get on this level?
There would have been some amazing videos of Prince rolling around half naked on a piano, but I suspect Prince demanded that his visage be entirely erased from Youtube. He exists simply as a digital spirit. A very sexy digital spirit.

BREATHER

Finally a free moment.

Discovery:

HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT

I found this blog through DJ Rupture, as he's the reigning emperor of dance music theory. There are some interesting posts about gender and sexuality in dance music culture, focusing primarily on House.

Bookmark it.

RAIDERZ OF THE DARK-BLACK-STARLINER GET JUICE

THIS WEEK'S YOUTUBE RAID:
When Foxy (Bad Girl of the year, 96 Pam Grier) samples Jamaican classics, the people come together:

FOXY BROWN - "OH YEAH"

I've been watching a wide assortment of full-length gangsta classics on youtube; blast from my past=lots of raiders caps; start here:

Some really nice garage-y dub lamentation from new Hyperdub draft-pick DARKSTAR:
Darkstar - Need You

And my new #1 summer jam rescued from winter, courtesy of the benevolent WORD THE CAT:
Squeezer f/ Nature - Yote Ni Yale Yale (Word The Cat Screw)

(Note: Mr. C, if you're not down with me posting this link, don't worry, no one reads this blog.)

Balanced out by recent exploration of past obsessions (I guess I never became un-obsessed):

THE SMITHS - "THE QUEEN IS DEAD" (Directed by Derek Jarman)
